Ahhh Summer, lazy days, fresh squeezed lemonade, and the melodic sounds of children sweetly playing ball outside. So idyllic, so picturesque, so…….not reality, at least at my house! It’s a bit more like busy days trying to get to camp or VBS, water bottles spilled all over the minivan, and kids squabbling over who left the wet towel on the floor(again!) or the way their brother breathes too loudly. After a delightful morning like that, I’ve been known to banish everyone to separate corners with a book for an hour(or two) of summer reading until I’ve rejuvenated my mommy skills enough to head to the pool.
Admittedly, my kids really do enjoy reading but they also like a challenge. This Summer Reading For Tweens BINGO is a great way to keep your kids on track and is one of the Best Ways To Avoid The Summer Slide that plagues many students each Fall when school starts again.
This fun challenge can help enthusiastic readers branch out in their book selections and reluctant readers hone in on a goal during the months off from school. Whether you’re looking for a way to maintain good reading habits or a way to keep the peace around your house, this Summer Reading For Tweens Printable is here to help you out!
Summer Reading For Tweens
There are a lot of fabulous ways to keep your kiddos engaged with books and fresh ideas always seem to motivate my brood. I created these printables with the hope of encouraging my own children to take a few forays into the world of non-fiction as they’re pretty set fiction enthusiasts.

There’s also something satisfying about checking things off a list and my kids seem to have inherited that little quirk from me, so marking through the BINGO boxes is good for all of us it seems. As I mentioned before, I don’t struggle with getting my children to read for pleasure so I have them complete ALL the boxes on their BINGO card in order to earn a reward.
For less motivated kids, I’d start with achieving a BINGO in any direction to earn the reward. The reward isn’t anything expensive or extravagant, and I’m an advocate of Gifting Experiences Over Things, so something like froyo for dinner or a round of mini golf with the family are things we’ve done in the past. Here are a few reward ideas that may work at your house:
- purchase a new app, book, or music downloads
- trip for ice cream, froyo, icees, etc.
- family activity: bowling, skating, mini golf, water park, beach day, picnic, game night
- summer snowball fight, kids vs. adults
- trip to the movies or kid’s theater performance
- museum tickets
- have a friend spend the night or a themed playdate, like a Lego Challenge
