Michelle and I are HUGE readers as are our kids. We know the value of reading and the way it can help children not only with their overall education, but also to expand their imagination as well as their understanding of the world around them. We’ve made it a point to provide tons of great kids reading resources here at Sunshine and Hurricanes. So, this is why we also wanted to share about an amazing event that takes place right in our backyard here in South Florida – The Miami Book Fair.
The Miami Book Fair International is a yearly event founded by Miami Dade College that takes place in November. This eight day literary party attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and features some of the most well-known authors from all over the world.
Author Events
This year the fair begins on November 15th and debuts with its popular “An Evening With…..” series where book lovers can actually attend intimate gatherings including readings and discussions with noted authors.
A few authors participating in the series this year include:
- Patti Smith
- Jane Smiley
- Tom Brokaw
- Robert B. Reich
- Gary Snyder
- David Axelrod
Street Fair and Children’s Alley
The big attraction of the event though for families is the street fair that begins on Friday, November 20th. More than 450 authors will be in attendance during the three-day weekend reading and discussing their books.
For kids, Children’s Alley is NOT TO BE MISSED! Here kids of all ages will find a literary wonderland filled with theater and musical performances, arts and crafts, storytelling and more. Plus, this year there is whole section for tweens and teens with comics and graphic novels as well as presentations by graphic novelists and illustrators.
I’ve taken my children to this event several times and it’s been such an enjoyable family experience. It’s also a great way to encourage young readers and help them to see how much fun books can be as they get the chance to engage with their favorite characters and see the magic of books brought to life in many different ways.
If you want to find out more about the Miami Book Fair, you can check out the entire schedule of events right here: Miami Book Fair 2015 Schedule.
